Dorothy Sarris McDaniel didn't arrive at flowers by the obvious path. She holds degrees in criminology and social work. But somewhere along the way, stems found her — and Birmingham has never been the same.
Dorothy Sarris McDaniel opened her flower market in 1977 with a clear-eyed belief that floral design was a craft, not a commodity. What began as a single shop on Birmingham's 3rd Avenue South became the city's most trusted name in wedding florals, event design, sympathy work, and everyday arrangements.
Along the way, Dorothy authored two books — Dorothy's Simply Beautiful Flowers and Flowers by Dorothy McDaniel — sharing her philosophy that beauty should be accessible and that every arrangement tells a story. She appears regularly on Talk of Alabama (ABC 33/40) and has been a speaker at garden clubs, corporate events, and the Birmingham Museum of Art.
Her work has been featured in Southern Living, Southern Accents, and Birmingham Magazine. In 2009, the Women's Committee of 100 For Birmingham named her Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2024, WeddingWire's Couples' Choice Award recognised Dorothy's with one of the wedding industry's most trusted distinctions.
None of that is why brides keep coming back. They come back because Dorothy still shows up, still listens, and still builds every arrangement by hand. The shop is exactly what it has always been — a flower market rooted in Birmingham, open to whoever walks through the door.
Dorothy's arrangements and philosophy have appeared in the South's most-read lifestyle publication.
Regular television segments — arrangement tutorials, seasonal features, and floral design advice.
